The Office of Travel brochures and manuals

The fracture destroyed large swathes of land and a majority of the population, but it wasn’t just lives that were lost. Many of the systems and constructs of society were wiped out as well. The first few years after the accident was an extremely hard time for anyone trying to live, let alone rebuild anything from the old world. There can be no argument that one of the most important organizations to emerge in those early years was the Office of Travel Brochures and Manuals (OTBM). Founded by Ron Kapili sometime in 2052, the office served as an invaluable resource to those trying to repair the damage that had been done and remains an important asset for islanders seeking knowledge today.

Ron spent most of his life tinkering and collecting instructional manuals. Most of his toys had been taken apart and put back together at least once. He built his first bike himself from parts he had printed at Ano Lee’s maker commune in Lahaina. Unlike most mothers in her situation, Ron’s mom encouraged the young boy, and would provide him with countless how-to magazines and owner manuals to the home appliances he seemed fascinated with. Partially working vacuum cleaners, tripped circuits, and the distinct smell of electrical fires was common around the Kapili home.

While he was a wizard with tools and anything electronic, the structure of school was too restrictive for Ron. Failing almost all of his classes, it was no surprise to anyone when he dropped out, and began working at his mother’s thrift shop. If it weren’t for the great accident he might have spent his entire life fixing TVs, and the hand-held games that were sold in the store. Sometimes extraordinary talents are exposed through extraordinary circumstances, and such was the case with Ron.

While many around him sat stunned or scrounged for food in those first few days, Ron got to work. Within days he had fixed the store’s solar panel with his trusty folder of user manuals. By the end of the week, he had a generator working again too. At the end of the month, survivors in the teenager’s neighborhood all had light to sustain them through the uncertainty of the long nights. The boy collected a number of new owner manuals too and began work on the repairable items they belonged to. When he found a travel brochure about tours offered at a nearby aquifer facility his story took another big turn.

Water was at a premium, and up until this point most people had been relying on streams, and the few working wells scattered around the island. While looking at the brochure, Ron recognized the make and model of the water pumps used at the facility from some manuals he had collected. After packing his tool bag, arranging the proper manuals in his binder, and recruiting some help, he set off to the water plant to see what could be done.

To the delight of many, the group scavenged what parts they needed and had 2 pumps working by the end of the day. Word of clean water and the boy with the manuals spread quickly. Survivors from all over were soon seeking out Ron with hopes that he could fix their items, and brochures offering suggestions of places to go next. It became quickly apparent that there was too much work for the young man and his crew. It was then that someone suggested that they set up a place where others could get the information needed to make various repairs, and go about rebuilding places of interest. The Office of Travel Brochures and Manuals was established soon after.

Today the office is a valuable resource to anyone wanting to explore a new area, repair items, or build something from scratch. Physical copies of how-to books, user manuals, or brochures are still available for purchase, but most customers choose to have them uploaded to their Ceremplants. The office will still purchase any pamphlets, flyers, and user guides that are brought in, but prices vary greatly based upon the item’s rareness. For a nominal fee, visitors can get a history lesson by viewing Ron’s original collection in the “Drawers of Knowledge” exhibit that some have called “the most important stack of dog-eared documents to ever be crammed into a file cabinet.”

If you are trying to repair an item, learn a recipe, discover a new area, or just unload a stack of booklets, the Office of Travel Brochures and Manuals should be your first stop.

Sergeant Kaua’s War Academy Announces Youth Program

For years you’ve known Sgt. Kaua’s War Academy as the premier hand-to-hand combat academy and school of battle on the island. The academy has deep roots and a long history. Colonel Kaua fought alongside the legendary Kānaka chief Ikaika at the battle of Black Reach Beach, helping to make the island safer. Sergeant Kaua took a lifetime of his father’s battle philosophy and training to develop a system of combat that is unparalleled in its effectiveness. Now, he’s ready to pass on that knowledge to the next generation. For the first time ever, the War Academy will be accepting a limited number of child students.

Most combat and self-defense programs concentrate on the rigorous drilling of moves to perfect technique and complete focus, but not the total battle system. Without the unnecessary shackles of discipline holding your young one down, he or she will be able to grow into the perfect instrument of slaughter that you always knew they could be. Your child will not only be able to protect themselves and those around them, they will gain the confidence and know-how to charge heedlessly into their enemies and send them running.

“My father knew that the problem with plans is that they could always go wrong. Battle is a messy game and the rules are always changing. Without relying on tactics, I’ll teach your child the power of mindless battle. The shark isn’t the king of the reef because of its carefully thought-out stratagems and complex contingency plans. It bites and it bites in a frenzy. I’ll help your child roll back their eyes and channel their inner shark.”

The Sgt. will help your child unleash their personal volcano, and allow their vengeance to erupt on the battlefield. Our system will pinpoint the fury hiding deep within their psyche and teach them to harness it. Do you make them go to bed earlier than they like? Do they have a sibling that is constantly teasing them, or breaking their things? Maybe they have an unusual physical trait that other children make fun of. All of these can be harvested and transformed into a dish best served cold. The Sgt. has a way of helping you recognize things that you didn’t even know made you angry and amplifying them into a blackout rage. It’s hard for your enemies to foil your plan if you don’t have one. When obliterating the enemy is your only job you can get a lot of work done.

While we believe the cornerstone of any good instrument of war is the correct attitude, we also recognize that it is important to learn a few more practical skills as well. We will train them in the ancient Hawaiian art of Lua. Your offspring will learn to stop opponents by breaking bones, using pressure points, and more. We teach our students to be proficient in all three major weapons: pololu, newa, and koa axe. Guns jam and rust. Ammunition is expensive and untrustworthy. At the War Academy, we believe in getting our hands dirty. Your youngster will learn all three standard pololu thrusts deemed most effective in real-life combat situations. Their enemies won’t be able to do much when they’re spiked to the ground. If they can break a coconut they’ve got all the strength they need to harness the lessons learned in our advanced newa techniques. You’ll have a hard time telling if all that blood is theirs, or their partner’s when they begin the Sergeant’s patented koa axe dance. They’ll be chopping their way to victory in no time thanks to the Academy.

We strive to keep things simple, effective, and realistic to best simulate real-life situations. As such, there will be times that your child won’t have a standard weapon within hands reach so we believe in a rich improvised weapons curriculum. “Most people don’t realize that the average child’s bedroom contains at least 11 ways to die. Whether it be a pillowcase full of batteries, a well-placed spray of Manimal to the eyes, or the corner of a block to the temple, I’ll teach your kid how to shut down a threat in seconds and get back to their coloring.”

Iron sharpens iron and there’s no bigger piece of iron on the island than Sgt. Kaua. His father was a hero, and his campaigns have made him a modern-day legend. With years of warfare under his bloody belt, who better to teach your children the skills necessary to turn them into tiny terrors. Help us help them learn the lessons they need to survive. The world is a dangerous place. Let’s make your kids dangerous too. You owe it to them!

A limited number of slots are available, so hurry! Tryouts begin at midday tomorrow at the Duracave bunker outside of Pu`u village. Please have them bring a short essay (~500 words) describing why they would make a good herald of carnage and what battle means to them. We’ll assess your children’s physical skills, potential, and temperament. We’ll post our acceptance list, and contact you with scholarship options by the end of the week.

Chilean Resort Set To Debut Veil Lift System

There’s no doubt that the tourism economy has seen a huge boost in the past 10 years thanks to Veilcorp gateway technology. No single share of that boost has been bigger than the one seen by luxury destinations. Some analysts predict that this year, the total contribution of travel and tourism to the global economy will top $15 trillion. With those kind of numbers it’s no wonder why so many high-end ski resorts have popped up in the South America.

Nestled in the Andes just a short drive Northeast of Santiago is Villa del Derrochador. There are a lot of destination resorts in the area now, but Derrochador remains the standard by which all other are measured. It is their newest feature on their main slope however, that will put them miles ahead of the competition.

Each of their 30 suites comes with a personal butler to attend to your every need, and is personally decorated to your wishes before you arrive. Staff will craft a home away from home if you want with furnishings similar to your own, including family pictures. If you would prefer a more rustic look with indigenous Mapuche art or modern asian trappings, the Villa can accommodate you too.

Drink cocktails with hand crafted cubes carved from 10,000-year-old glacial ice in the lavious dining area. The chef cooks over heated lava rock using native high-elevation herbs and flowers instead of traditional condiments to produce some of the best seafood dishes in the world. A warm bowl of his award winning Valdiviano is close to heaven.

After a long day on the slopes feel free to warm-up in the heated infinity pool or enjoy a glass of their award winning wine. Did I mention that you can take one of the onsite helicopters for a ride to tour their private vineyard? Couple all these amenities with the low number of guests, and you can feel like the slopes are your private ski sanctuary. It is no wonder that Villa del Derrochador tops the list of South American getaways. But just when you thought it couldn’t get any more opulent, the Villa is set to unveil its greatest attraction yet.

In combination with the Chilean government and Veilcorp, Derrochador will debut the most expensive ski lift system in the world because there are no lifts. On the main slope skiers will now be veiled from the bottom to the top. “When you go on a ski vacation you want to ski, not sit in an uncomfortable chair up the slope, or worse yet, inside a little box crammed with others for long periods of time. With our new system our guests can be back to the top in less than 20 seconds after a run,” says Villa director Hector Alonso.

Alonso says the new veil lift is the culmination of years of work between Veilcorp, the government, and Derrochador. Officials have been quietly installing and testing the system for months and plan on highlighting the system as a key feature in a future advertising campaign. A local official says, “The people at Veilcorp and Villa del Derrochador have been wonderful to work with and it is our hope that this will further make the case that there is no better place to ski in the world. I can’t wait to try out the lift myself!”

While Alonso is excited about the lift too he has his eyes set on even bigger prizes. “Eventually we’d like to get the lift system working immediately during a run. We envision a time in the near future where your trip down the hill only ends when you want it to. Imagine being instantaneously transported to the top of the slope while you’re still skiing. You could literally ski all day. That is our immediate goal. We’re working closely with Veilcorp engineers and I think we are close,” he says.

That’s not all. The bigger plan according to Veilcorp sources in Lahaina is the creation of a number of partner resorts spread across the world with linked systems. Imagine making a run down your favorite slope in Nevada and near the end finding yourself at the top of the trail at Derrochador, then on a beach in Maui ready to enjoy the breeze and a few hours of surfing to warm up. A skier could make one long continuous run down all of his or her favorite destinations and end the day watching the sunset while riding the waves. “The price? It would be incredibly expensive. This would be a bucket list thing for most people, but in my experience fun is always expensive,” the source says. Personally, I can think of no better way to spend a lifetime of savings than on the ultimate ski/surf package.
