The History of the Regulators Part II

There have been a number of groups and individuals who have impacted the day-to-day lives of survivors on the island. Few have had as big of an impact as the regulators, however. The collection of dedicated civil servants and like-minded individuals, strive to implement and enforce the rules and regulations that existed before the collapse of civilization. Many, including the Kānaka, see them as the last vestige of an old failed system. Still, others admire their perseverance.

Earlier this week we covered the group’s founder, Esther Hele, a former DMV worker striving to keep the roads safe and the drivers licensed. Today, we’ll cover the group’s most notorious member, Betsy Kaukau. The name alone is enough to make even the bravest Kānaka warrior nervous. Even amongst members of the Regulators, Betsy is considered misguided. Some say that her story is more fiction than fact and serves as a cautionary tale. Others disagree. Either way, her story is an important piece of island history.

Betsy was not born to love her job like many of the Regulators. She was led down the health inspector path through tragedy. Until her 12th year, the young lady was remarkable only in her unremarkability. She wasn’t interested in anything in particular, excelled in no sport or extracurricular activity. She wasn’t a gifted orator or artist and was an average student. Everything about Betsy was standard with no deviation, until that fateful day at her father’s company picnic.

The media at first didn’t fully appreciate how bad the tainted food was. By the end of the week, they would be calling it the worst case of food poisoning ever recorded. A CDC investigation found that a perfect storm of tainted lettuce, undercooked chicken, and spoiled cole slaw was responsible. There was a cobb salad that combined listeria, trichinosis, salmonella, and e-coli in one dish! There were a number of recalls and legal suits filed but it was too late for the 34 men, women, and children lost that day. It was too late for Betsy’s family.

The girl was sent to live with relatives in Lahaina where she began to finally show an interest in something, microbiology, and food safety. Betsy became obsessed with protecting others from the same fate as her family. As a teenager, she was banned from several local restaurants for barging into the kitchen and demanding to check food temperatures or test sanitizing solutions with her container of test strips. Nobody was surprised when she eventually became a health inspector.

She attacked unsafe food handling practices with a vengeance that unnerved her co-workers and led to a number of official complaints. Betsy was particularly hard on the businesses that had banned her as a teenager. She became convinced that they were lying about their food handling practices and hiding something. When she publicly accused the owner of a popular beach bar of serving poisonous pina coladas, it was the transgression that her superiors had been waiting for. A disciplinary hearing was scheduled for the following Tuesday, September 27th, the same day that the veils fractured. Nobody knows what happened at that hearing or how Betsy survived. What is clear, is that the catastrophe had a profound effect on the already obsessed woman.

For a while, the islanders embraced her, and she was helpful. She taught safe food preservation and canning procedures. She explained to all who would listen that public health was more important than ever, and was the first to discover that the island’s white rats carried prions and shouldn’t be eaten. There can be no argument that for a time Betsy saved many lives, but as the Regulators grew in power so did her instability.

She began to preach about the pureness of food. Claiming that all food was flawless until tainted by mishandling and lies about its preparation. She believed that lies could taint people and spill over into their meals just as easily as bacteria, and it was her job to protect the public from both.

This is where the stories began to conflict and get a bit murky. There are claims that she believed that the entire summer harvest in a Thriver village had been tainted and had every plant dug up and destroyed. Still, others say that she thought the people had been tainted so she poisoned their food to stop the spread of the infection. Either way, many lives were lost and it was just the beginning.

The stories of her exploits for the next year range greatly from the bizarre and misguided to the horrific. What is certain, is that Betsy took complete control of the food and its distribution in Lahaina for a long time. She began to target specific people she felt did not take safe food handling seriously. They found no mercy at the bottom of her sanitizer vats, and no pity from her long probe thermometers. Finally, though, they had enough.

With her compatriot Esther run-off after a disagreement with the Kānaka chief Ikaika, Betsy didn’t have the manpower to hold off those who wanted her gone. She supposedly escaped her attackers and fled East to join up with Esther, but accounts of the assault vary. Some say she made it and plans on coming back with a whole new arsenal of twisted kitchen equipment and shutdown notices. Some say she is finally at peace somewhere in the rubble of her old headquarters. Whatever the truth, everyone who has ever accidentally dropped food on the floor can breathe easier since she’s been gone.

The History of the Regulators Part I

There have been a number of groups and individuals who have helped make the island livable since the fracture. From science fair kids joining forces with a dance troupe, to mysterious delivery men trying to keep Front street safe, many have dedicated their lives to making things better. Then there are those that are harder to quantify.

The Regulators are one such group. A collection of dedicated civil servants and like-minded individuals, the Regulators strive to implement and enforce the rules and regulations that existed before civilizations collapse. Most on the island views this as a preposterous endeavor at best. The Kānaka in particular, have a very dim view on rebuilding things in the image of what existed before. However, there are those that admire the tenacity of the Regulators and their resolve.
This is the first in a series explaining how the group got its start, and detailing their three most important members.

By all accounts Esther Hele was a miserable child. Born the daughter of a well-known Pali-ites instructor at the world famous Kokua Wellness Center and Spa here in Lahaina, Esther’s troubles began almost immediately. The carefree and self-regulated parenting style in her home did not fit Esther’s personality. Thriving on order and rules, she would routinely put her toys in long lines in order to listen to their concerns and give them daily direction.

This behavior spilled over into preschool, where young Esther took great delight in reporting any and all infractions, (especially line cutting), to the teachers. Elementary school was no better. She was picked last, if ever, for every game at recess. The other children made fun of her need for order and love of authority. Things finally came to a head when Esther presented a 10-page report on the short-counting issue running rampant during hide-N-seek to the Principal.

It troubled her greatly that others were routinely allowed to disregard the rules without consequence. It seemed unfair to her that many of the adults appeared not to care, or were unwilling to enforce mutually understood standards of conduct. The lunch line was haphazard and inefficient at best. Esther declared that she would be better equipped to run things than her classmates or teachers. It was her proposed punishments for them that drew the most concern. After some discussion with school officials, and a licensed counselor, it was agreed that Esther should attend a more structured private school on the mainland.

The new school was exactly what she needed. While she still had trouble relating to her peers, Esther thrived under the strict new rules. She soon became a favorite of the staff and was allowed many special privileges. She reorganized the stanchions in the library, reducing the average check-out time by almost a minute. She added 30 pages to the school’s code of conduct packet to remove any ambiguities. Instances of students sneaking off campus dropped by a third under Esther’s diligent night watches. Not only did Esther like the strict rules, but she began to love the power as well.

Eventually she graduated and needed to find work. College seemed too chaotic for Esther and her teachers suggested a summer job while she worked on her plans for the future. On paper the DMV seemed liked the perfect fit for her, and as Esther would tell you, paper never lies. She did well at private school, but she was born to work at the DMV.

The lines were magnificent. If someone gave you trouble you could put them in another line, and watch the hope drain out of their eyes, by closing it minutes later. While the rules and organization inside seemed capricious or punitive to some, they made perfect sense to Esther. Still, she missed her family and longed to mold her hometown into a more efficient place to live. She was eventually granted a transfer.

Esther had just began to settle in at her new office. She wasn’t even supposed to start for another week, but she wanted to time the lines and look for any possible rule breaking from her co-workers before she started her next report. When the island started shaking she quickly led them to the designated emergency shelter and had the forethought to bring the water tanks from the lobby. Say what you will about her personality, but all the survivors inside that DMV office that day owe her their lives.

They stayed in the shelter for what seemed like forever. Finally, the water situation started to become dire. Esther knew she had to get out and survey the area, but she was not quite ready for what she saw. Everything was in ruins. She assumed there must be other survivors somewhere but she didn’t see any. Though she didn’t know what the problem was exactly, it was a safe bet that nobody would be veiling in with help anytime soon. It was clear what she had to do.

With the veils broken, organized roads and safe drivers were more important than ever. She couldn’t clean water but she could make sure the equipment needed would be delivered by licensed drivers. She didn’t have any medical equipment but she could ensure that it was distributed promptly through an orderly transportation system. She had the knowledge and skills. She understood how important her cog was in the wheel of civilization. She would continue the DMV’s work.

The rest is history. For years Esther could be found patrolling the roads and conducting driving tests around Lahaina. Some of the questions changed over the years. “What should you do first if you find a Menehune has cut your brake lines?” and “If you are trying to escape a Night Marcher who wants your skull, but the light is red, are you allowed to continue without coming to a complete stop,” are two of the most recent additions. Esther tried to keep the rest as close to the original as possible. Her staff grew from the initial survivors to a group of over 100, all looking for any bit of the old world they could find. Islanders started to call them “The Regulators” within a year, and the group flourished.

Esther and the rest of the Regulators bit off more than they could chew however, when they presented the great Kānaka chief Ikaika with a letter demanding he register his war canoe. The bill, which included 35-years worth of penalties, was considered a provocation by the chief. When Esther told him that if he didn’t like it he could move to the back of the line a short battle began.

Lives were lost on both sides but the Regulators tenacity was no match for the Kānaka’s numbers. In her younger days Esther might have fought to the end, but with years came some wisdom, and she retreated to reorganize her paperwork. Lahaina hasn’t seen any Regulator activity in decades now, but it is rumored that the group has never been stronger. Some say that they are simply adding fees and penalties to the Kānaka’s bill while continuing to license those not strong enough to fight back elsewhere on the island.

Love them or hate them, there’s no doubt that the Regulators hold an important place in the history of post-fracture Lahaina. If you manage to get a vehicle going make sure you follow the rules of the road and your paperwork is in order. The last thing you want is to see Esther in your rearview mirror.

Arrest Made In Veilcorp Bombing attack

An arrest has been made today in the Veilcorp Luau bombing attack. 38-year-old Ben Drakes turned himself in to authorities this morning, claiming responsibility for the bombing which killed 10 and left 39 injured. Among the dead were Tracy and Alohi Oeming, wife and daughter of Veilcorp’s founder Eric Oeming. Eric himself remains in a coma. Officials say Drakes claims to have acted alone but the investigation remains ongoing. They had no comment as to motive in the case.

However, before turning himself in Drakes released a 5 page document to the press explaining why he bombed the Luau. In it he claims to be a member of the radical environmental group Gaia Guard and provides a detailed list of Veilcorp “crimes” against the Earth. The sometimes disjointed statement reads in part,

“Our mother is sick. She is sick because we turned our backs on her instinctual laws. She warned us many times but we refused to listen. Her tears flooded the land when we cut down her forests to build our cities, but we didn’t listen. She spread disease as we killed her other children for their meat and hides, but we didn’t listen. She ran a fever when we pumped our industrial smoke into the sky, but we didn’t listen. Her body quaked as we fracked into her, draining her rich dark blood, but we didn’t listen. She swept the land with cancer and deformity when we tried to play with the building blocks of life, but we wouldn’t listen. Veilcorp was tearing her apart with gateway technology. She was starting to lose her fight, so we made you listen. Oeming and his followers thought they were above Gaia’s law, so we made them answer for their cruelty. 18-years-ago a small town in Iowa was forever scarred by Oeming’s arrogance. A small group of people from that town pointed out the obvious and made the world listen for a moment. Our mother is running out of time, so we made you listen again.”

Drakes had been working as a lift operator at the Veilcorp station in Lahaina for the past 3 years without incident but has a long history with law enforcement. Records indicate that he was arrested and charged with assault or other violent crimes 3 times. Neighbors say they are in shock over the arrest and claim that Ben was “a quiet guy who kept to himself.” When asked about his employment a Veilcorp spokesperson had no comment.

Friends and family acknowledge that Drakes had a troubled past but claim that he had turned his life around 10 years ago. While he struggled when he was younger, they say Drakes completed treatment programs and was taking online classes to earn a college degree. They claim to have no knowledge of his alleged involvement with Gaia Guard.

His mother’s attorney released a brief statement that reads, “The Ben we all knew and loved would not do anything like this. My son was a loving young man who enjoyed spending weekends working with his grandfather on his farm. Ben always put other people first in his life and would go out of his way to help anyone if he could. Like many, he had a brief struggle with substance abuse and did some things he was not proud of. As far as we knew he had turned his life around and was working towards a better future. The Ben I know is not a monster and is incapable of such a violent act. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of everyone caught in this senseless act. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and would ask the media to direct all inquiries to our lawyer.”

Details of the crime remain few. With the investigation ongoing, police aren’t saying much but acknowledge that others might still be involved. Drakes 5 page public confession provides little additional information. For their part, Gaia Guard has remained uncharacteristically quiet.

Veilcorp spokesperson Lisa Hunt released a statement this afternoon about the arrest that said in part,

“I’m thrilled that this monster is where he belongs, behind bars. It’s too bad that the justice system will undoubtedly show him more mercy than he offered his victims. While it’s important to remember the 10 killed and 39 injured in this cowardly act, we should be devoting our energies to rooting out every last one of these Gaia Guard terrorists. We can spend time in reflection after they are all behind bars and awaiting execution. I would encourage officials to take a close look at anyone claiming affiliation with the group before more innocents lose their lives over nonsense and propaganda. In addition, we should take a close look at VeilWatch as well. They have been baiting these animals for years without any repercussions. They may not have planted the bombs but it’s clear that they planted the seed for this act. It’s time for them to reap what they’ve sown.”

Veilcorp Transports Contaminated Animals To Lahaina Facility

subject: Update and relocation of 6th Generation R2137 “Brisby” Line

A little over 9-years-ago we successfully sent subject R2137, (aka: Brisby), through the gateway and discovered that the process had made some profound changes in the animal. At that time I theorized that some of the amazing abilities exhibited by the rat would be passed on to her young. As we now know that theory was correct. We have carefully bred the “R” line with limited numbers into the 6th generation and I will continue to keep you apprised of any new developments and issues as they arise. That brings us to the recent incident in the Seattle facility.

4 subjects in the Brisby line were taken by Gaia Guard radicals when they attacked the lab. We followed protocol by removing all sensitive information from properties nearby and alerting our government contacts. They have been taking point with local law enforcement and have had control of the public messaging. Unfortunately the animals have not turned up so far and no arrests have been made.

To be honest Eric, we haven’t heard anything in over a year so I think nature has solved the problem for us. As we learned firsthand, the Brisby line is very hard to keep in enclosures. I find it highly unlikely that anyone ignorant of their abilities would be able to keep them contained. Since we haven’t had any reports of animals grouping together in large numbers, or acting oddly in any other way, I think we might be safe. Knowing how much the rats love to tinker with machinery and control any other animals they come in contact with, I find it doubtful that they would have survived without acting out. We will keep working until we have a definitive answer of course, but I think we can breath a little easier.

It has been a few months now since we’ve relocated the rest of the line to the Lahaina facility and they are assimilating nicely. Not only has the move proved beneficial from a security standpoint, but the rats seem to be thriving in their new environment. The 6th generation retain many of the abilities and characteristics of their predecessors.

The rats seem to be able to share information amongst themselves. Teach one a task or trick, and the others become immediately capable of performing the activity. This communal knowledge seems to be passed on at birth automatically without any outward teaching. The generation 6 line has retained knowledge taught only to previous generations in this way. The animals are capable of typing out words in order to communicate wants or needs, and are capable of impacting the behavior of other animals. This ability seems less powerful in the 6th generation than others, with the rats being able to change the mood of other animals (passivity being most common) rather than the total control demonstrated in past lines. This still makes them too dangerous around other animals however, as a lab assistant learned in Seattle when confronted by a dozen raging rabbits.

Their love of building blocks borders on obsessive, and their urge to examine and fix anything mechanical (within their physical capabilities) is almost as strong. In addition, they remain big fans of instructional videos especially anything involved with food production. The newly installed vending machine has been a big hit and has led to some interesting new behaviors. We just got the latest model from Reality Machine which includes a recycler and the rats have gone nuts over it.

Because of the cost, we tried in vain to keep them away from it at first, but eventually let them examine it under close supervision. It’s ability to breakdown items, especially food, led to some excited chattering around here. I’m not sure some of the flavor combinations are going to take the culinary world by storm but they seem to like them. Past favorites include vanilla-broccoli-bread and peanut butter and herring bites, with cheesy-raspberry-chips being the snack of choice for over a week. Additionally, their need to have these creations photographed have allowed a bit of much needed levity to creep in around here. I’ve attached some of the pictures and there are many more hanging around the lab. We can take solace in the fact that they don’t seem interested in taking selfies yet but a few do insist on being next to their food when pictures are taken. I’ll keep you updated on any further events as usual.

Task Force Report On Gaia Guard Activity

The following is an interagency task force report based on actionable intelligence of Gaia Guard activity in the Seattle area. The intent is to provide background into the group and protocol for law enforcement interactions. Due to an ongoing government investigation we urge officers to follow these guidelines and not discuss them with any outside party.

The Group
Gaia Guard is an eco and domestic terrorist organization founded by Robert Bennett in 2025. Bennett was a colleague of Dr. Eric Oeming at the University of Michigan where he was an assistant professor teaching biology and life sciences. The size of the group has fluctuated wildly since it’s inception but is thought to have less than 100 serious members, with at least 1,000 other part-time members and collaborators across the country. The group works like many others, through localized cells keeping it viable after large-scale arrests. While any company involved with animal testing or power production can be a target of Gaia Guard, Veilcorp has become the main target since the successful teleportation of a rat in 2027. Extreme violence is rare in Gaia Guard attacks but not unheard of. Most attacks focus on the destruction of equipment, the stealing of records, and the release of any animals held at a facility. Attacks are well organized and highly technical in nature. It is not unusual for security systems and surrounding cameras to be taken offline during Gaia Guard operations.

We ask that you call in any criminal activity related to the group and not take direct action due to the ongoing investigation. If you are first to respond to an active Gaia Guard operation call the task force, secure the perimeter, and wait for further instructions. This request only applies to non-violent criminal activity.

Public Communications
Do not discuss this report with anyone outside of law enforcement and direct any public inquiry to our liaison. The task force suggests using the wording below when communicating the recent burglaries to the public.

Commercial Burglary Update

About the Crime:

This update, based on these recently acquired video stills, reminds commercial and office building management operating in the K2 District (Downtown Central), of a group of unknown offenders who are forcibly entering office and commercial buildings through the main floor or underground parking areas. The offenders are forcing open revolving doors or windows with the intent to take laptop computers, cell phones, and other electronics as well as a number of test animals. The offenders have breached street level doors during the daytime, then returned hours later to complete the burglary. The phrase “Gaia Guard” has been painted at each site. Employee’s have also been contacted by VeilWatch before each burglary. These incidents have occurred in the general geographical location listed below:

7100 Block of S. Western Ave. on May 1, 2030 during the early morning hours

2400 Block of W. 71st St. on May 7, 2030 during the evening hours

What you can do:

  • Keep the perimeter of your property well lit.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately.
  • Keep doors and windows secured.
  • Immediately repair any broken windows, doors or locks.
  • If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy of the incident for investigating detectives.
  • If you are a victim do not touch anything, call police immediately.
  • If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information.
  • If contacted by VeilWatch or Gaia Guard call police immediately.

Building Decals and Disappearing Skies

The team has made a number of inventory improvements this week. We have a completely new ui on your inventory screen. Things have been streamlined and rearranged to make better use of space, and make it easier for players to quickly change gear and grab items. Information about each item is easier to pull up, we have new selectors for the inventory and quick bar, and everything is semi-transparent. You now have a chance of seeing a creature charging at you, if you stopped somewhere to organize your hat or knife collection.

The art team put together an extensive decal library to quickly age and mark up buildings, especially ones made with our procedural building system. We have decals for wood, concrete, stone, and metal, covering a wide variety of things like: scratches, dents, mold, moss, rust, water streaking, and even dulled colors. This should allow us to add the right amount, and specific type of weathering, to any building and save some artist time in the process.

We took a look at a few refinements done to our newest batch of mutants. We talked about what models and items we need for the areas we’re building out around the Thorcon Power Plant to make them complete. We dug deep into our old model and art folders to start an unused asset inventory. We found quite a few things that were put on the back burner for one reason or another, and planned out where these items could be used in game. The team made a list of what models were ready to go and which still needed a little work before being game ready.

The web team remains focused on putting together promo and game videos. We’ve been hard at work cutting up and editing existing videos for GIFs, and spent a fair amount of time coming up with captions. We discussed a number of possible videos in the future: highlighting important aspects of the game, differentiators that highlight the beautiful danger of post fracture Lahaina, and things that are just funny to watch.

In addition to putting together blooper reels and getting glamour shots of some of our most horrific mutants, the web team is working on the upcoming achievement system. Jared is setting up the backends and compiling a list of web specific achievements ahead of ingame ones. Jesse has been working on layouts and the ui, as well as designing reward badges for each achievement.

We’ve fixed a number of bugs discovered while running around shooting things that moved in the jungle, and each other. Medkits will now heal virtually any status effect that your player gets, including poison, but you’ll still need to make a fire to get yourself warm and dry if you’ve been standing in the rain, or went swimming. Ammo boxes will have ammo inside them, as one would expect of an ammo box. You will no longer find that some crafting recipes are empty, leaving you to wonder what items were supposed to be there. Double click looting should work soon as well, so you can quickly strip everything of even remote value from a corpse or bag. This should be very useful if like me, you’re a loot hoarder, and only begrudgingly drop items once you can barely walk from the crushing weight of the junkyard on your back.

Our march toward UE 4.20.2 hit a bit of a snag last week when the staging build suddenly found itself without any sky. There’s no doubt that it makes the game look much more ominous, and might be a good storyline for an alternative world down the line. However, one of Chris’ mantras is always that we make things look more Hawaiian. While a skyless dark world is scary, we didn’t really see a Hawaiian connection. In fact, none of us could remember ever seeing a picture of Hawaii with the sky a dark formless void. It’s usually pretty sunny. We’re working on bringing the blue back currently, but here’s a shot of “Dark Lahaina”.

Dev Update: Dressing for the Weather

We started a new sprint this week so there was a lot polishing and last minute bug fixing going on. Refinements to our alert and inventory system continued and our crafting/assembly and cooking system also got a little love. We found a bug that would trap you inside a corpse after you dispatched an enemy. It’s common knowledge that bird watching while entangled in the entrails of a Night Marcher is one of the lowest rated activities in Lahaina, so we put a fix in.

We discussed and laid out in more detail, our plans and wants for an ecommerce system. We talked about promo codes and explored the convoluted world of drop shipping, logistics, and fulfillment services. We did some more patcher work and discussed how we could make it faster and more efficient. We did some docker work and made plans for autoscaling UI soon. We continued to do some work on lighting, blending, and textures. We loved this shot, but the sun is Hayuuuuuuge and premature inflation of the sun is not one of our disasters.

Since we got the ability to take off clothes and play dress up last week, we came to the realization that an important decision needed to be made. Realistic genitals, Ken doll, underwear, or some other solution for completely stripped down characters. Some of the more gritty in the group championed a natural look, arguing that realistic genitals would add a certain something to the game. Others argued that something a bit more avant-garde like a big red button where the organs should be would set us apart. In the end, calmer and more sensible heads prevailed and it was decided that the traditional boxer-brief for the male characters and boyshort + bandeau top for female characters was more fitting. Although, the idea of having those garments brightly colored and easily targeted is still being kicked around to encourage the wearing of clothes, which will protect players from the elements and make them a less obvious target.

Various audio components were added to the game. You can now hear yourself running, generators hum, and you can listen to the rain fall. Speaking of rain we added a some rain/wet lens effects. The weather improvements did lead to the discovery of another bug as well. Months ago, when we first started discussing what we thought might be fun to do with the weather, someone suggested that the possibility of being struck by lightning would be neat, and we all agreed. Unfortunately for any of us play testing, the lightning strikes had somehow been set too high. Every 30 seconds lightning would strike a random area sending a deadly shock through anything within 60 feet. Lightning in the game is not only striking twice in the same place, it is striking over 100 times an hour. Storms had unwittingly become the most dangerous part of the game. It looks like Zeus and Thor are having a shooting contest any time a storm passes through. We’ll get it fixed soon. Below you can see a few shots in the bad weather that we managed to take before being filled with at least 1.21 gigawatts of electricity.

We finished our (temporary, likely) in-game chat system so you can share your words with your friends (but not words with friends, we’re not that kind of game company). We designed it like our quest, alerts, and login to be integrated with Google services.

San worked on a new patcher for your quicker loading enjoyment and removed a bunch of old code. Multi-stream downloads are supported. He worked on a minimal RPC Voip test service that Discord would be hooked into later.

We did some more trueSky debugging to fix some of our mysterious glowing and other strange lighting issues. We found that directional light on the Moon was not hooked up. We also changed the moon’s size slightly in the hopes that it would fix some of our trouble. We don’t anticipate any effect on the tides.

We’re doing some more post processing work so you can expect some extra pretty pictures coming real soon. In addition, a bunch of environmental improvements are in the works including some improved blending and ground textures. Note the cool totem.

With all the environmental work coming up we had a discussion about its impact on performance. We talked about the balance between having a game that is enjoyable to play on a mid/low level GPU vs. making a setting that is as realistic and beautiful as possible. In the end we decided the price of pretty was worth it and we would focus on making a fun, lush environment instead of worrying about the game playing smoothly on an old laptop.

Friends and Thorcon and Genitals and Stars, oh my

Hey everyone! We had a busy week and these are some of the highlights……

The team made the friend request notifications smarter, so once you’ve sent a request you aren’t constantly reminded of it. We worked out a few lingering sitemap issues that were causing URLs to point in the wrong places. The team fine tuned the sidebar navigation following some of your suggestions. We hope it’s a much more intuitive clicking experience for you now. Thanks for the feedback! We smoothed out a number of styling and color problems on the blog and squashed a few minor layout related bugs there as well.

In the meeting, we discussed social links and if our energies would be better focused on providing useful in-game stats for players about their characters and houses. Instead of spending weeks tweaking the Facesnap or Twitterbook API’s, we decided to devote our time on systems that would benefit our players more directly.

We’ve started looking into how best to integrate Discord so our players can easily ask us questions and keep better apprised of our development process. Ideally, we’d end up on a channel with all our alpha users and let em chat with us there, or something. In the short term, players can add a link to their Discord user profile in the social settings.

Also this week, we should be getting our trueSky source license. Top minds are on it, the tippyest toppiest! We hope to have our sky looking a little more awesome gorgeous soon.

We’re starting to make a framework for our quest system so you can feel like you have a purpose while running around and get rewards. We’re also finishing up on how the inventory works, you have to put your stuff somewhere, and a couple of game mechanics including: cooking, crafting, and combat.

We’re working on a catalog of sorts for game items that users can look through. It will be separated by item type: clothes, weapons, medical equipment, etc. Items will be accompanied by a picture, game statistics, a description of what it is, and even how it works in some cases. We look forward to eventually reading the product reviews and seeing how many stars you give the travel size Leiomano.

We made a lot of other important decisions too. For instance, we decided that 127, the element used to provide power to some of the game’s most futuristic technology, is likely to cause genital cancers if inhaled. So there’s that…..

First of Many Game Updates

Hey everyone! Here’s what will be the first of many many updates on how the game is going…

During our creative meeting today, we reviewed and approved a number of new items for the game. If you’re a fan of hazmat masks you’ll be happy to learn that you now have multiple options when it comes protecting yourself from inhaling poisonous gas. You can see newly approved items and props on our media page. This implies poison gas, which has implications 😉 We also saw some clothes.

We worked some more on the planning for our game tutorial. We’re calling it “First Hour” until someone comes up with a more clever name. First Hour will teach you a number of game systems and mechanics including how to eat, drink, fight, heal, recycle/craft an item, loot, and have fun while running along the post-apocalyptic beach.

We’re still working out some of our issues with trueSky but we currently have some beautiful star-filled skies even if we sometimes run into an issue like a glowing house at the end of the pier.

The inside of the communications tower got some love today and as you can see we’ve spared no expense when it comes to having proper seating for our guests.

Finally, we talked about abuse detection in chat and how we’re going to handle people who want to run around swearing like a racist nationalist sailor. San has come up with a potential solution.
