Task Force Report On Gaia Guard Activity

The following is an interagency task force report based on actionable intelligence of Gaia Guard activity in the Seattle area. The intent is to provide background into the group and protocol for law enforcement interactions. Due to an ongoing government investigation we urge officers to follow these guidelines and not discuss them with any outside party.

The Group
Gaia Guard is an eco and domestic terrorist organization founded by Robert Bennett in 2025. Bennett was a colleague of Dr. Eric Oeming at the University of Michigan where he was an assistant professor teaching biology and life sciences. The size of the group has fluctuated wildly since it’s inception but is thought to have less than 100 serious members, with at least 1,000 other part-time members and collaborators across the country. The group works like many others, through localized cells keeping it viable after large-scale arrests. While any company involved with animal testing or power production can be a target of Gaia Guard, Veilcorp has become the main target since the successful teleportation of a rat in 2027. Extreme violence is rare in Gaia Guard attacks but not unheard of. Most attacks focus on the destruction of equipment, the stealing of records, and the release of any animals held at a facility. Attacks are well organized and highly technical in nature. It is not unusual for security systems and surrounding cameras to be taken offline during Gaia Guard operations.

Procedures
The task force requests that any information obtained regarding Gaia Guard activity be immediately reported to our liaison or the Deputy Commissioner. We ask that you call in any criminal activity related to the group and not take direct action due to the ongoing investigation. If you are first to respond to an active Gaia Guard operation call the task force, secure the perimeter, and wait for further instructions. This request only applies to non-violent criminal activity.

Public Communications
Do not discuss this report with anyone outside of law enforcement and direct any public inquiry to our liaison. The task force suggests using the wording below when communicating the recent burglaries to the public.

SPD Business Alert
Commercial Burglary Update

About the Crime:

This update, based on these recently acquired video stills, reminds commercial and office building management operating in the K2 District (Downtown Central), of a group of unknown offenders who are forcibly entering office and commercial buildings through the main floor or underground parking areas. The offenders are forcing open revolving doors or windows with the intent to take laptop computers, cell phones, and other electronics as well as a number of test animals. The offenders have breached street level doors during the daytime, then returned hours later to complete the burglary. The phrase “Gaia Guard” has been painted at each site. Employee’s have also been contacted by VeilWatch before each burglary. These incidents have occurred in the general geographical location listed below:

7100 Block of S. Western Ave. on May 1, 2030 during the early morning hours

2400 Block of W. 71st St. on May 7, 2030 during the evening hours

What you can do:

  • Keep the perimeter of your property well lit.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately.
  • Keep doors and windows secured.
  • Immediately repair any broken windows, doors or locks.
  • If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy of the incident for investigating detectives.
  • If you are a victim do not touch anything, call police immediately.
  • If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information.
  • If contacted by VeilWatch or Gaia Guard call police immediately.

Excerpt from Captain Hank Gaud’s Book “Around the World In 80 Milliseconds”

The transport area looked nothing like I imagined it would. There was no hoop or archway to walk through, no door, or giant metal cannister that I would be lowered into. No, it looked just like a sturdy chair with some some equipment and a thousand tubes and wires mounted above. The team had spent years preparing for this moment.

They had sent a 1kg cube of tungsten through the gateway back in 2026 and some of that same team surrounded me. I’d be lying if I said some of their stories about the early days weren’t still stuck in my head. Some of the first cubes were lost forever. They still didn’t know where for sure. Others ended up warped and misshapen. One even got stuck to the floor somehow. The rat made it through the following year. They didn’t talk much about that, which worried me more than the earlier cube horror stories.

They had two-and-a-half-years to get it right I kept telling myself. I had to trust that they wanted me to make it as much as I did. We were all on the verge of making history. Like me, these people were the best of the best, specially chosen for the project. I trusted them with my life. It was my heart beating out of my chest that I was worried about.

As a pilot you usually have the semblance of control even when everything has gone to shit. Pulling on a stick, flipping a switch, or pushing a lever helps you focus even if it doesn’t help. A focused mind is a fast mind, and a fast mind makes fast decisions. It’s those fast, definitive decisions that can save you when the aircraft, and you, come crashing down. This was completely different.

The chair would hold me completely still. It didn’t matter how quickly I knew the process was working or not. There wasn’t anything for me to do but hold on and pray that everyone had done their job. As they strapped me in, I wondered if I was the right person for the project, but doubt is a dream killer. I had trained hard for this day and we were going to make this dream of Dr. Oeming come true. Just then I saw him enter the room.

Ironically his jet was having mechanical problems that day and he had to book a last minute flight. He had called earlier and told everyone to conduct the test even if he couldn’t make it, but I couldn’t imagine that day without him. I wondered if the people around Archimedes or Tesla appreciated just how lucky they were to be around that kind of genius. I knew that I couldn’t understand it fully myself. I didn’t know how any of this worked, not really. I was just the guy brave or dumb enough to volunteer. That didn’t mean that I was ignorant of what an honor it was. I appreciated him the way someone who doesn’t paint can acknowledge a work of the great masters. I’ll remember the look of excitement in his eye and the quiver in his voice when he wished me luck until the day I die. If this went all as planned my name would forever be associated with Eric Oeming. That alone was worth all the risks.

It was time and the countdown began. I felt the tingle of electricity on my skin. The hum grew louder and louder until it was deafening. The room began to shimmer like the air off hot tarmac. I realized that I couldn’t hear anything anymore. It wasn’t just quiet, there was a complete lack of any sound and everything went black for a moment. I thought I heard music playing somewhere off in the distance and my head began to spin. Then just as quickly as it had gone dark, a blinding light made me wince. Slowly the light began to dim and I could once again hear the normal sounds of the lab. My head was still spinning. I was glad that I was strapped into the chair. I could hear shouts and I thought something had gone wrong. After half a minute or so I could see what the shouting was about. In front of me was the lab in Kona instead of Seattle, where I had just been. It had worked! I had traveled through the Veil.

subject: Subject R2137 “Brisby” Update

It has been a little over a month since we successfully used the gateway technology on Brisby, and the subsequent discovery of remarkable changes in the rat. She remains in good health with no physical detriments. Her weight and appetite remain normal as are her labs. Her cognitive and special changes are briefly outlined below:

Language: Brisby is capable of recognizing and correctly identifying objects and her favorite foods. She seems to understand tone and can follow simple verbal instructions. However syntax and other higher elements of language seem beyond her grasp so far. Her abilities can best be described as similar to those of a language-deprived child. It may be that we have missed a developmental window in Brisby, and this is the limit of her skills. It is just too early to say at this point.

Social Interactions: As I mentioned to you before, Brisby’s interactions with the other rats has changed. She seems able to communicate with them over a distance without physical contact or a line of sight. We have ruled out that these new interactions are pheromone or scent based. There is a marked increase in brain activity when these communications happen which has led us to hypothesize that what we are witnessing is a documented case of animal ESP.

Empathic Projection/Control: Related to her social interactions but remarkable enough to call out separately is Brisby’s ability to make other rats do her bidding. Whenever she is brought within close proximity to the other animals they move as close as possible to her and remain motionless. If they are moved away they return and resume this behavior. Occasionally these periods will be broken up with one-on-one play with Brisby or with the rat bringing a food item or toy to her. Further, when asked to make another rat move a certain distance away or complete a simple task, Brisby has been able to force the subject to comply without any visible interaction.

Accelerated Learning: Traveling through the gateway has greatly increased Brisby’s ability to learn. She has beaten all previous records in our standard maze, and seems to be able to learn new configurations in record time as well. In addition, an assistant discovered that she has an affinity for watching instructional videos. A how hatchery chickens are made video is her favorite. She asks to watch it every morning and multiple times in a day. However, after careful consideration and an increased interest in factory farming on her part, we’ve decided it best to remove all of the birds from the facility and restrict eggs from the lab. Technical videos seem to run a close second. She lacks the size and dexterity to complete most of the projects shown to her of course, but she was moderately successful at adding more memory to a lab computer after watching a tutorial. She can also successfully login to a work station she has been provided. As noted above we are keeping careful record of her search history.

At this point we will continue with the program as I’ve already laid out and keep you apprised of any new developments. It might be interesting to see if these abilities can be taught to others with her help or passed down to offspring.
